Risk of Over-Commitment

commit yourself to one person

When you fully commit yourself to one person, you are essentially giving them the power to control your decisions and actions. This can leave you vulnerable, especially if the person does not have your best interests at heart. For example, imagine a business partnership where one partner decides to trust the other completely and leaves all financial decisions to them. If the trusted partner turns out to be manipulative or careless, the fully committed partner could lose not only their money but also their reputation. By maintaining some distance and keeping your options open, you protect yourself from potential betrayal or failure.

In personal relationships, similar risks exist. If someone places all their emotional dependency on another person — be it a friend, family member, or romantic partner — then any rift or misunderstanding can lead to emotional devastation. Balance is key, as is retaining your independence. Commitment doesn’t mean giving up your sense of self.
