way to gain control

Generosity can also be a way to gain control over situations and people. By giving away something of value you can shift the dynamics of power in your favor. The receiver now feeling indebted to you often becomes more malleable, and you can guide their actions to your benefit.

A clear example is in the world of mentorship. Picture a successful entrepreneur who takes a young and promising mentee under their wing. The entrepreneur gives the mentee invaluable advice connections, and even financial support to launch their business. The mentee overwhelmed by this generosity feels a deep sense of gratitude and loyalty. Over time the mentor subtly begins to influence the mentee’s decisions steering them in directions that also benefit the mentor’s own interests.

This example shows how generosity, when given selectively creates bonds of loyalty and dependency. The mentor’s generosity wasn’t entirely selfless; it was a strategic move to gain influence over someone they saw potential in ensuring they stayed within their sphere of control.
